Is Motherhood a Let Down?

Is having a baby a let down in an adult’s life? Some people may think that staying home to take care of a child might be a let down compared to a fast-paced career… and thinking from this perspective sure made a hilarious series that is currently on Netflix!

The Let Down is a seven episode series made by Netflix to highlight common struggles that new parents have, such as sleep deprivation, communication problems with those close to you, and feeling lost among all the newness.

The main character, Audrey, was a career woman and now she is staying home with her baby on maternity leave. The series centers around a new parent class and the people in the class and how they interact with Audrey and her baby. Audrey has “Mom-issues” toward her therapist mother, who has “Mom-issues” with her horse-raising farming mother…

The show had me squirming a few times when the situations got new-mom awkward, such as when Audrey’s period started up again and she had a to turn a diaper into hygiene pad… And when Audrey thinks about buying drugs from the dealer in the park where Audrey drives to get her daughter to fall asleep…sleep deprivation makes us do or at least consider some weird things.

This show is not kid-friendly. The main character swears quite a bit—venting frustration, apologizing to her baby—and there is a bit of sexual encounter that is not graphic. I fast-forwarded over a few parts.

There are heart-warmings scenes between the mothers and daughters in the show, and you’ll just have to watch it to see if you think parenthood is a let down or not.

(From my perspective, parenthood is NOT a let down—it is the best job I have ever had because of the joy of seeing this little life growing and learning how to roll and eat right before your very eyes.) Here’s a book that has been helping me learn how to be a happy mama:
